Types of MUGA Surfacing

muga surfacing

A muga surfacing(multi-use games area) is a great way for schools and local communities to get active and take part in a range of different sports. There are many different surface options to choose from with the MUGA becoming increasingly popular for sports and recreational use in schools, colleges, public parks and academies across the UK.

Macadam – also known as tarmac is a popular option for MUGA surfaces and is suitable for most ball rebound sports. It has an open-textured porous tarmac surface with slip-resistant materials and is available in a choice of colours. The surfacing can be painted with different line markings to create courts for specific sports.

2G artificial turf

This is a very versatile surface type with a more natural feel than a sand filled MUGA and is suitable for 5-a-side football, netball, tennis, basketball and volleyball among other activities. It can also be coloured for a more attractive aesthetic.

PUMA Conqueror 3G

This third-generation surfacing meets FIH, FIFA 1 star equivalent and IATS performance standards. It is a polymeric surfacing that is very comfortable and can be used with studded boots.

Polymeric MUGAs are made from SBR and/or EPDM rubber with a polyurethane binder and can be laid in a variety of colours. They are often used for training areas for non-ball sports such as athletics and are also a good choice for wheelchair sports. This type of MUGA is less slippery than tarmac and offers good shock absorbency.
