In 2015, in response to harrowing accounts of institutional child sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy in the town of Ballarat, a campaign of ribbons emerged. A global movement, the “Loud Fence” campaign sought to end decades of silence and to recognise survivors by displaying coloured ribbons on the fences of institutions where abuse had occurred. The movement quickly went viral. Institutions’ reactions were mixed; some removed the ribbons, only to find them replaced. Ultimately, the ribbons were an enduring symbol of acknowledgement.
Securing Spaces: The Art of Ballarat Fencing
On Sunday, hundreds of brightly coloured ribbons were removed from the fence outside St Patrick’s Cathedral in Ballarat, triggering anger from some survivors and puzzlement from church authorities. The ribbons had been tied there in response to the findings of the Royal Commission into Clergy Child Sexual Abuse. They had been part of the Ballarat-born Loud Fence campaign, which was launched last year to support victims and survivors and to expose the ongoing culture of secrecy within the church.
