When it comes to buying a DC weed dispensary, the process can be simple or a little more complicated. It’s important to know what you’re doing so that you don’t end up on the wrong side of the law.
In the District, adults 21 and older are allowed to possess up to two ounces of recreational weed and give away up to one ounce. But selling weed is still illegal, as is smoking it in public places. That’s why a lot of cannabis businesses set up shop at local shopping centers and street corners, peddling gummy spliff gift bags and other cannabis-themed merchandise.

Despite this, police rarely enforce the ban, and many people are getting caught up in the marijuana industry. Those caught with more than two ounces face a fine of up to $2,500 and could end up going to jail. Then there’s the fact that weed remains federally illegal and federal officers can arrest anyone in DC for smoking on any federal land (including Rock Creek Park and the National Mall) or while riding the Metro system.
Fortunately, there are a few legal loopholes that allow residents to legally purchase marijuana from reputable DC weed dispensaries. The first is through Initiative 71 “gift shops” such as The Garden. At these locations, you don’t actually buy recreational weed directly; instead, you purchase a token that can be exchanged for marijuana at a later time. This method of purchasing is open to both residents and tourists with a valid ID.
