Apostille for Personal Documents

Whether you’re a New York resident dealing with time-sensitive legal proceedings or an international traveler requiring official documents, navigating the apostille process can be confusing. But by understanding the most common situations that call for this form of authentication and leveraging a trusted, expedited service provider, you can ensure your document is accepted in foreign jurisdictions without the stress or hassle.

In a nutshell, an apostille for personal documents is a certificate issued by the state of origin that authenticates your documents. It removes the need for certification by the destination country and is recognized in 69 countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention on the Apostille. If your destination country is not a member, you may need to also undergo the full legalization process at the embassy or consulate of that country for your document to be accepted there.

How to Get an Apostille for Personal U.S. Documents

The type of documents that need an apostille vary, but include vital records such as birth certificates, marriage or divorce certificates, and death certificates. Court documents and judgments, patents, notarized attestations and statements, and academic diplomas along with transcripts may also require an apostille to be accepted in a foreign jurisdiction.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) does not accept any documents directly from individuals. Instead, it has outsourced the collection and delivery of attestation/apostille to five designated outsourced agencies. The fee chargeable by these outsourced agencies for collection and delivery of attestation/apostille by MEA is Rs 50 per document. The address of these outsourced agencies is: CPV Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Room No. 104, Jawahar Lal Nehru Bhawan, Janapath Marg, New Delhi-110001.
